Moviedrome Screenings Jan - June 2025

Our monthly Moviedrome screenings bring you the chance to discover - or rediscover! - a choice cut of cinema that's cult, classic or somewhere in-between. The films are hand-picked by our resident film buff George Cromack, who introduces each screening. 

• Fri 31 Jan - Barbarella (1968, 15)

In an unspecified future, space adventurer Barbarella is sent by the Earth's president to retrieve missing scientist Durand Durand from the Tau Ceti planetary system. Durand is the inventor of a laser-powered weapon, the positronic ray, which Earth's leaders fear will cause mass destruction...

• Fri 28 Feb - A Taste of Honey (1961, 12A)

Teenager Jo lives with her mother, Helen, in northern England. When Helen marries impulsively, Jo finds herself out on the streets. She finds a room with Geoffrey, a gay co worker who's adrift himself, but then finds she's pregnant after a one-night stand...

• Fri 28 March - La Haine (1995, 15)

Based on real events, La Haine focuses on three friends over the course of one day in the housing projects of suburban Paris in the aftermath of a riot. With tension in the air and the police on constant surveillance, it’s not long before prejudice and hostility turns into violence, with tragic consequences...

• Fri 25 April - Belly of an Architect (1987, 15)

Stourley Kracklite, a driven, detail-obsessed architect, travels from America to Rome with his much younger wife, Louisa, to oversee an architectural homage to a personal hero, 18th-century master builder Etienne-Louis Boullée.

En route by train, Stourley and Louisa conceive a much-wanted child, but Stourley's obsession with his wife's expanding belly, her perceived infidelity, and his own recurrent bouts of abdominal pain reach epic and dangerous proportions.

• Fri 16 May - The Adventures of Baron Münchausen (1988, PG)

During the Age of Reason of the late 18th century, the Turkish army lays siege to a European city where a theatre production about the extraordinary heroics of famed German aristocrat Baron Münchhausen is underway...

• Fri 4 July - Harold and Maude (1971, 15)

A cult classic, with 20-year-old dead-pan Harold and loveable fun-loving 80-year-old eccentric Maude meeting at a funeral and developing a taboo romantic relationship, exploring the tired theme of the meaning of life with a fresh perspective.
