What is Propel?
Propel is our new Creative Careers Programme for young people between the ages of 15 and 17. The free programme runs on set days between January and July 2026 and offers young creatives the chance to gain hands-on industry experience across all theatre departments.
Aimed at teenagers from the Scarborough area, the programme provides a unique opportunity to explore the breadth of creative careers that can be found at the theatre.
Applicants will work with teams across Production, Producing, Creative Engagement, Fundraising and Marketing. They will see work in pre-production, take part in workshops, support events and develop backstage skills.
Why?
Propel is not just about engaging with industry-based experiences, it is also an opportunity to explore creative preferences, become part of a team (and wider theatre network), work to meet deadlines and learn more about theatre.
In addition to this, participants will be given:
Staff offers, including ticket discounts and invitations to press nights
T-shirt and a mug to hang in our green room to feel part of the team
References for CV/ Employment/ Further Education applications
A Propel Programme Pack with essential information about the building and the staff teams, a calendar of things to see and do, mini tasks, careers sign-postings and much more!
How?
Places are available through application and interview although they are limited as we are a small team. Read on for more information and our application form.
INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS:
Why apply?
Apply if you are creative. Apply if you like art, theatre, dance, organising, fundraising, creating posters, creating social media content, designing costumes or sets.
Apply if you like story making, like music, want to try something new, want something for your CV, want to meet new people.
Apply if you love films, costumes, if you’ve seen loads of theatre. Seen no theatre. Apply even if you think you’re not experienced enough. Just apply.
Who can apply?
Anyone between the ages of 15 and 17 from Scarborough and the surrounding area who wants to learn more about creative careers.
What if I want to apply but can’t get to the theatre?
Apply anyway. We can talk to you about how we may be able to support your transport when we get to interview stage.
What if I've never done an interview before?
No problem. The reason why we want to interview you is so that we can get to know you in person rather than through an application form. You don’t need to buy anything special to wear, we aren’t going to try and trip you up with questions that you can’t answer, we just want to have a chat and learn more about you.
Top Tip – come prepared with questions for us!
