Scarborough Fringe at the SJT!

We're delighted to be part of this year's second Scarborough Fringe! Part of Scarborough Fair, it's all about showcasing incredible cultural experiences in different venues across the town between Fri 13 and Sun 22 June.

Here at the SJT, you'll be able to see:

  • Sam Jewison in Concert (14 June): Expect classic songs from the Great American Songbook and beyond, including “Have You Met Miss Jones?”, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, and “Let’s Fall in Love”. Music that inspired such legendary artists as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Oscar Peterson features alongside stage and screen highlights from “Hello, Dolly!”, “West Side Story”, and many more.

  • Jumpers for Goalposts (16 June): A heartfelt and hilarious comedy about football, friendship, and finding your place in the world. Tom Wells’ Jumpers for Goalposts premiered at Watford Palace Theatre in 2013 before touring the UK, including a celebrated run at London’s Bush Theatre. This special staged reading will be performed by members of the SJT Young Company.

  • Writing a play with Kat-Rose Martin (17 June): Where do you start when writing a play? This workshop will focus on generating some initial ideas which might one day flourish into a full-length play. Kat's a playwright from Bradford who's currently on attachment at the SJT as part of the Playwrights ‘73 scheme.

  • Battleground (18 June): Battleground isn’t about conflict between a community and its young people - it’s about the struggle to become the person you want to be, rather than the one you feel you’re expected to be. It’s about breaking free from negativity and finding your own path. This recorded performance is followed by a post-show discussion with director Rob Salmon and performer Keane Liley.

  • Creative Catch Up (18 June): A chance for artists and creatives from in and around Scarborough to catch up! Meet some of the team from the SJT and other local creatives in a relaxed, informal environment.

  • Feral (19 June): In 2024, the SJT collaborated with local young theatre maker Keane Liley to create Battleground, a bold response to the negative perceptions of some young people in Eastfield - issues highlighted in an article in The Daily Express. The play reached hundreds of young people in the town, sparking conversation and reflection. Now, the story continues. This live, in-the-round performance is a love letter - to a community, growing up, forging connections, and building a future.

  • Poetry Live at the SJT! (20 June) A unique opportunity to catch four of the most exciting voices in Yorkshire performance poetry. Charlotte Oliver, Felix Hodcroft, James Koppert and Helen Birmingham will share the stage, and the show will also include a time-limited open mic section, providing members of the audience with slots of three to five minutes to perform a poem of their own.

  • Dance Together (21 June): We're proud to host the very best of local dance talent from across the town! With choreographed pieces from Hattons, Kellet's Performing Arts, The Benson's Stage Academy, The Brave Project and Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet, prepare for a night of dynamic performances celebrating our dancing town in the beautiful Round auditorium.

  • The Isolation Creations Haus of Games: Totally 1980s Summer Prom (22 June): Crimp your hair, dig out your cummerbund and rewind for the ultimate ’80s Prom! Get ready for a Sunday afternoon of comedy, bingo, games and a party atmosphere like no other, brought to you by Scarborough's cheekiest queens.

  • Putin's Folly: The War on Ukraine, Three Years On (9 July): Join journalists from the world’s most listened to podcast covering the war in Ukraine, analysing the lessons western countries and their militaries should be learning from the war against the backdrop of an increasingly uncertain world.
