New National Theatre Live Screenings

New National Theatre Live screenings for your diaries, including Andrew Scott in Vanya, Mark Gatiss and Johnny Flynn as Gielgud and Burton in The Motive and the Cue and Michael Sheen as the man who transformed Britain’s welfare state and created the NHS in Nye.

Dear England | 25-26 Jan

The epic hit stage show featuring Joseph Fiennes as Gareth Southgate, the England manager with the nation’s hopes on his shoulders.

It’s time to change the game.

The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game? The team has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and manager Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.

Joseph Fiennes' portrayal of Gareth Southgate is ‘pitch-perfect’ (Time Out) in this ‘thrilling’ (Sunday Times) new play by James Graham, with set design by Es Devlin. Graham reunites with director Rupert Goold, following their acclaimed productions of Tammy Faye and Ink, in this gripping ’new stage epic’ (Telegraph) about both nation and game.

Vanya | 24 Feb

Andrew Scott plays multiple roles in this bold and intimate one-man production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, straight from its sold-out run on the West End.

Ivan (Uncle Vanya) has spent his life managing the estate and business affairs of his family with little regard for his efforts.

"Superhuman" Andrew Scott plays eight characters in this one-man show, including the titular character, his second wife Helena, retired professor Alexander and his daughter Sonia, Vanya’s widowed mother Maureen, his romantic rival the country doctor Michael and the nanny Maria, alongside Elizabeth and Liam.

The Motive and the Cue | 29-30 March

Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy) directs Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton in this fierce and funny new play.

1964: Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, is to play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s exacting direction.

But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.

Nye | 9-10 May

Michael Sheen plays Nye Bevan in a surreal and spectacular journey through the life and legacy of the man who transformed Britain’s welfare state and created the NHS.

This epic new Welsh fantasia - also the 100th NT Live to be released in cinemas - is written by Tim Price and directed by Rufus Norris (Small Island).
