Schools

SJT plays a much wider role beyond the stage. We work with children of all ages in schools across Scarborough throughout the year.

Our mission is to support children’s learning and well-being and to teach important life skills. From a tour of the theatre and creating songs with primary school children to one-off workshops and long-running projects that complement the curriculum, we use theatre, music and the arts to encourage a lifelong love for culture. We can work with you to put together a bespoke learning package or you can choose from one of our popular workshops.

Early Years - Speech & Language

SJT is currently working within Early Years settings in five schools across Scarborough. We paired each school with an artist and co-designed a programme that aims to develop speech and language skills. Using music, singing, playing instruments and a variety of drama activities, we complement the work already done in Early Years Foundation Stage to develop gross motor skills, fine motor skills, composing stories orally and physically, developing vocabulary and listening to instructions.

How we work with Primary Schools

We believe that if we can get children and young people involved in creative activity from the very start and work closely with primary schools to make that possible, then children will develop a love of the arts that will last a lifetime. In our time, we’ve run dance workshops, taught costume design, and got classes singing and writing their own songs. We’ve also run after-school clubs and had young people performing their own plays on our stages. If you’re interested in seeing how we might be able to work in your school, please get in touch.

How we work with Secondary Schools

Over the years, we’ve worked with many secondary schools, sixth form colleges and further education establishments across Scarborough – devising and delivering sessions to meet all kinds of needs. We’ve toured our production of Build a Rocket into schools and run workshops around its themes. We’ve also supported curricular activity through drama sessions, attended careers fairs and offered work experience opportunities to give young people the chance to try working in the creative industries. If there’s anything you think we can deliver alongside your school, please get in touch.
